Risk / Return Ratings

Risk Ratings are intended as a guide to the potential volatility of returns from investing in funds. There are separate scales for Bond and Equity funds, reflecting the distinct characteristics of each asset class and the different roles that each asset class will play in meeting the needs of different types of investor. There are three categories for Bond funds (B-1, B-2, B-3), and five for Equity funds (E-1, E-2, E-3, E-4, E-5), with a higher number signifying a higher risk fund. One should not infer that a fund with a higher risk rating will produce superior returns than one with a lower risk rating. While over the longer term it is reasonable to assume that a higher risk fund offers greater growth potential, over shorter periods it may perform dramatically worse than a fund with a lower risk rating.
